Rooted Cuttings
Rooted cuttings are an economical way to get started growing your own blueberry bushes. We start by taking a larger blueberry plant and like the name implies we cut the canes into sections about 4 inches long. These are then placed in growing trays and covered with clear plastic domes. It usually takes 8-12 weeks for the cutting to grow the size root system needed to be transplanted into a form pot for growing to bed or field size. The typical spring cutting will be about 6 inches tall while the fall cuttings will run 4 inches tall. 1 Year plants The 1 year blueberry plants are usually between 12 and 16 inches tall. While these blueberry plants can be transplanted into the field they will perform better if left in their pots or planted into a sheltered bed to grow for another year. This will give their root systems more time to develop and that will give you a better start when they are transplanted into their permanent location. 2 Year plants The 2 year blueberry plants are fully ready and can be transplanted into their permanent location. These blueberry bushes will run about 24-36 inches tall and typically will have 1-2 canes with some branching. The taller canes can be cut back 6-8 inches to help encourage branching and more new cane growth but it is not necessary to prune them until after their 3rd year. The 2 year blueberry plants can either be in containers or bed grown. Either will work fine but the bed grown can have a little more spread out root pattern than those in the form pots. 3 Year plants The 3 year blueberry plants can either be pot or bed grown plants with multiple canes growing with an average height of 36-48 inches tall. These blueberry bushes are well on their way and can be expected to produce a small crop of berries their first year. These blueberry bushes are more expensive to ship but if you would like berries sooner rather than later these are the ones for you. |
